inspiration to study abroad
I have been studying Japanese since I was 6 years old. Growing up in a Japanese-American family, I always had to privilege to witness local Japanese-American customs and culture here in Hawaii, but I have always wanted to visit Japan to learn about the country's language and culture first-hand. When I was researching colleges to attend, I found out that the University of Hawaii at Manoa had one of the best study abroad programs in the country, so I chose to attend UH Manoa.
Before studying abroad, I wanted to prepare myself with a good foundation of the Japanese language and culture through a Japanese minor at UH Manoa, in addition to my business degree. I originally intended to take all four years of Japanese language classes (from Japanese 101-402) at UH Manoa before going abroad, even though the minor only requires three years of Japanese language. However, I ended up enjoying my Japanese language, culture, and linguistic classes so much that I ended up adding Japanese as a second major.
I finished my Japanese degree before going abroad, which took about three years. It is normally suggested that you study abroad in your second or third year to avoid delaying your graduation. I delayed my graduation one semester for study abroad, but I am happy with my decision. Completing UH Manoa's Japanese program before going abroad has given me a good linguistic and cultural foundation before going abroad. I am really excited to start my journey in Japan!
